How to Price Gutter Cleaning Jobs
Define what “gutter cleaning” includes before giving a price. Removing debris from the channel, clearing a blocked downspout and treating stains on the outside are separate tasks.
Check your proposed charge in the Job Profitability Calculator. Use the Quote Calculator to total a costed base service and clearly scoped add-ons.
Separate the three services
- Interior gutter cleaning removes the agreed debris from the channel and includes the specified cleanup and disposal.
- Downspout clearing addresses flow through the downspouts. State whether routine checks are included, how blockages are handled and whether dismantling or repairs require a further quote.
- Exterior gutter washing cleans the visible faces. Brightening or stain removal may require a separate surface-compatible treatment; do not promise it as an incidental part of clearing leaves.
List detached garages and sheds separately. Record gutter guards and whether their removal and reinstatement are permitted and included. A quoted gutter clean should not silently turn into guard repair or roof work.
Measure the runs and establish safe access
Record linear feet, building height, stories, downspout count and breaks in the gutter runs. Note conservatories, sloping ground, tight side yards and obstacles that affect equipment placement. Estimate ladder or other access-equipment moves using a safe work plan, not the shortest route across a roof.
Work within your training, equipment instructions and applicable safety requirements. If suitable access cannot be established, refer or decline the job. Extra height can require different equipment and more time; a flat surcharge is only useful if it covers the actual plan.
Allow for debris, disposal and repeat visits
A light seasonal clean and compacted wet debris require different time allowances. Check whether an outlet obstruction can be reached through the agreed method and where removed material will go. Include setup, protecting nearby areas, cleanup, disposal and travel in the estimate.
Linear-foot pricing works for comparable height and access. A flat project price is clearer when guards, several short runs or a difficult detached structure dominate the labour. Apply a minimum service charge to cover the visit. For recurring maintenance, price the first neglected clean separately, then use its recorded hours to estimate later visits at the agreed frequency. Do not assume every return visit has light debris.
Worked estimate: channel cleanout and downspout work
Illustrative USD budget only. These rates, costs and margins are assumptions for this example, not market recommendations. Tax is shown separately from job revenue; confirm the treatment that applies to your work.
The scope is 160 linear ft of gutter on a two-story house with suitable access established, no guards and four downspouts. An assumed $1.50 per linear ft produces $240, above an illustrative $200 minimum. Routine downspout checks are included; clearing two identified accessible blockages adds a defined $60. Exterior brightening, underground drains and repairs are excluded.
Subtotal is $300, with no discount. Illustrative 5% tax adds $15, making the customer total $315. Allow four person-hours: one for travel/setup, two for cleaning and downspout work, and one for checks, disposal and teardown. At $30 per hour, labour costs $120. Materials cost $10, fuel/travel $20, equipment allowance $20 and disposal $10. Direct cost totals $180.
On $300 pre-tax revenue, gross profit is $120 and gross margin is 40%. After a separate $30 overhead allocation, $90 remains before other obligations. If a blockage requires work beyond the agreed access or scope, stop and revise the proposal.
In the Quote Calculator, choose Gutters and Use my rate. Enter length 160 ft, rate 1.50 per ft, minimum 200, add-ons 60, discount 0 and tax 5. The result is $315; the $60 add-on covers the separately agreed downspout work.
